Dr. David Keirsey is a clinical psychologist a professor emeritus at California State University, Fullerton, and the author of several books. He worked for public schools for 20 years then followed this with 11 years training therapists and pathologists how to change dysfunctional behavior in children and adults and specialises in the pragmatics of coaching children, parents, and spouses to decrease conflict and to increase cooperation.

The Keirsey Temperament Sorter while originally starting from the Myers Briggs Type Indicator but looked at how people behaved not just thoughts and feelings. Keirsey refined groups into four temperaments based on Expressive versus Attentive, Observant versus Introspective, Tough Minded versus Friendly and Scheduling versus Probing. It has similarities with Hippocrates’s four humours : sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic, and melancholic.

This gives these four Temperaments:

  • Artisans™ prefer jobs where they can troubleshoot, respond to crises and negotiate. They also enjoy identifying and responding to opportunities. Typically they are Composers, Crafters, Performers, and Promoters.
  • Guardians™ prefer jobs that demand responsibility. They enjoy improving the efficiency of processes and setting up standardized procedures. You’d find Protectors, Inspectors, Supervisors, and Providers here.
  • Idealists™ enjoy jobs that allow them to support and encourage others. Their tendency to be enthusiastic can energize and improve the moral of others. Examples include Healers, Counselors, Champions and Teachers.
  • Rationals™ enjoy jobs that demand a high level of expertise and high standards of competence. They enjoy designing and understanding systems. For Instance Architects, Masterminds, Inventors and Field-marshals.
